History

Ajmer which was founded by Ajayadeva, an 11th-century Rajput ruler was taken by Delhi Sultanate’s slave dynasty in 1193 but paid tribute and back to its Rajput rulers but in 1556, it was seized by Mughal emperor Akbar(reigned 1556–1605). From 1679 to 1770, part of the Jodhpur territory, it was occupied by the Marathas, and after this time there were incessant Rajput-Maratha wars up to 1818, when it was transferred to the British. Thus in 1878 the area of Ajmer was established as a chief commissioners province separate from the North Western Province as Ajmer-Merwara and after that it bifurcated into two tracts. The two extending farther to the east and north consisted of Ajmer and Merwara subdivisions while the Kekri subdivision was smaller, situated in the southeast. Before independence, many parts of Rajasthan were under their control including Marwar kingdom and Ajmer became a part of Rajasthan only in the year 1956.
